Good practices for climate change adaptation in the electricity sector
Ecodesign of the re-charging point for electric vehicles
Within the framework of the Basque Ecodesign Center’s activities, Iberdrola and Gamesa have worked together in the areas of Life-Cycle Assessment (LCA) and the ecodesign of products. Speci?cally, the object of analysis and improvement has been the Re-Charging Point Project – re-charging point for electric vehicles – with the aim of identifying and evaluating the major environmental aspects associated with the life-cycles of its two models (?oor model and wall model).
Some of the most notable improvements were:
- - A 9% reduction in the total weight of the product compared with previous prototypes.
- - A 10% reduction in the "overall environmental impact" of the product compared with previous prototypes.
- - A 12% reduction in the "climate change potential" of the product compared with previous prototypes.
- - Optimisation of the number of components used in the product, moving from the use of two independent batteries to just one integrated battery, and eliminating superfiuous parts.
Developing EPDs for electricity from the Iberdrola wind farms
Based on the work carried out by Gamesa when calculating the Life Cycle Assessment (LCA) for its G90-2.0 MW series wind turbine, Iberdrola was able to produce its two ?rst Environmental Product Declarations (EPD) in 2015, speci?cally, those relating to the electricity generated by two of its wind farms with precisely that Gamesa wind turbine model.
Speci?cally, the two EPDs in question were for:
- The “Alto de la degollada” wind farm, with 50 MW of installed capacity, and located in the municipalities of Castrojeriz and Los Balbases, (Burgos).
- The “Los Lirios” wind farm, with 50 MW of installed capacity, and located in the municipality of San Silvestre de Guzmán, (Huelva ).
These EPDs were in turn the ?rst worldwide to have the double certi?cate of the “International EPD System” and “Global EPD” systems.
